DOH says 6.3% of drinks in Taipei fail safety testNine of the 144 samples tested were found to be highly contaminated with E. coli, according to Chen Li-chi, head of the department's Food and Drug Division. The department explained that although most strains of E. coli areharmless, high levels of the bacteria in food indicate poor sanitation and contamination during the production process. The department advised consumers to check the sanitary conditionsat drink shops before buying the products. For example, consumers should check to see if there are insects in the shop and whether the ingredient containers are properly covered, it said. In its second sanitary inspection of drink shops this summer, the department tested 50 samples of ice cubes, 36 drinks, 17 sorbet items, 18 shaved ice items, and 23 kinds of drink flavorings. I thought the number would be higher considering the poor hygienic standards most places have. | |||||||||||||
