3 high school students charged over bullying

The China Post news staff--Three junior high school students in Taichung have been indicted on injury charges after they allegedly beat up a classmate, causing him to losing a kidney, in retaliation for the victim having reported them to a teacher about smoking, police said yesterday.

The three defendants punched and kicked the victim, surnamed Lai, at the school, and the act of violence damaged Lai's left kidney as well as inflicting other injuries, police said.

Lai was rushed to the hospital following the incident, and doctors had to remove the damaged kidney, the police said, without identifying the school or the defendants.

Lai's parents were saddened and angered by the violence, claiming it was a case of attempted murder, the Central News Agency reported.

The defendants showed deep remorse after their arrest, but police still referred them to the juvenile court.

Two of the defendants suspected that Lai was the informant who told a teacher that they had brought cigarettes to school.

They later asked the third defendant to help them attack Lai, police said.

Doctors said one kidney will still be able to support bodily functions. But Lai must take good care of his remaining kidney or the organ may develop problems in the future, they said.

I do wish both the Taiwanese media and legal system would get their definitions correct. This is a clear case of criminal assault, not bullying! Using the term "bullying" only serves to confuse the issue and downgrade what should be a serious offense. I am hopeful that this distinction is made in Chinese and that the confusion only arises from the translation to English. Otherwise someone really needs to understand the difference between physical assault and children "being mean" to each other.

I post this comment because this is not the first time these cases have been reported as "bullying".
