Drink recalled in Shanghai due to DEHP concerns

SHANGHAI--An importer in Shanghai is recalling a brand of Taiwan-made sports drink that may be contaminated by the carcinogen di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), China's national television network reported yesterday.

In March, 792 boxes of the sports drink manufactured by Young Energy Source Co. (YES) were imported, China Central Television (CCTV) said in a news report.

The importer has stopped shipping the 518 boxes of the drink in inventory and has required its retailers to remove and return the items that were on store shelves.

YES is one of many food and drink manufacturers in Taiwan that have been affected by the latest DEHP contamination linked to an emulsifying additive called cloudy agent, commonly used in fruit jelly, yogurt mix powder, juices and other drinks.

Investigations show that the tainted cloudy agent products were either produced by Yu Shen Chemical Co. or supplied by companies downstream from Yu Shen.
