Tiaoyutai islands were once local trading post

Taiwan Independence Movement supporter Shih Ming (史明) said during an interview by Japanese writer that the Tiaoyutai Islands (釣魚台) were once a stopover point by his peers when traveling between Okinawa and Taiwan and also by fisherman from those two locales as trading post, Japan's Sankei Shimbun reported yesterday.

Shih made his remark in response to questions posed by Japanese writer Hilano Kumiko during the interview, the transcript of which will appear in today's issue of 正論, a monthly magazine published in Japan.

Shih is known for his failed attempt to assassinate former Taiwanese president Chang Kai-shiak during the '50s. He did not openly return to Taiwan from his hideout in Japan until 1993 when the island's political system was transformed into a democratic one.

In the interview Shih described in detail how he and other Taiwan Independence supporters sneaked into Taiwan in the years after 1968 by hiring Okinawa fishing boats and vessels from Taiwan to traverse the waters between Taiwan, Tiaoyutai Islands, and Okinawa.
