Chen Shui-bian calls elections defeat for DPP

The opinions were made public by Chen's close aides and pro-Chen commentators who paid him a visit yesterday.

Chen, who is currently confined at the Taipei Detention Center pending trials for a slew of scam and corruption cases, had accurately forecast one month earlier the election results that the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) would keep the three areas of Taipei City, Xinbei City, and Taichung City while the opposition DPP would retain power in southern Kaohsiung and Tainan,

He said the shooting incident targeted at Sean Lien, son for former Vice President Lien Chan, on the election eve did not have much impact on the election results.

The DPP's failure to win any extra municipalities resulted mainly from the mistake of not using Taiwan's national identity and sovereignty as a major campaign theme, he said.

Chen also said the DPP should not simply attack the policies of the KMT administration and propagate its superior administrative capability.

The DPP should not shy from opposing the economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) signed by the KMT administration with Beijing.

Chen, an extremely savvy political figure in Taiwan, had mostly employed anti-China policies and splitting the communities of descendants from ancient Chinese immigrants to Taiwan and the relatively newer arrivals for his personal election campaigns or when coordinating campaign strategies for the party.

The next presidential race should be a duel with the pro-China policy adopted by President Ma Ying-jeou, who concurrently serves as chairman of the KMT and is seeking reelection.
