Transportation ministry plans to build new terminal at Taoyuan Airport

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) has decided to start constructing the third terminal building at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport next year. When completed in 2018, the terminal will be able to handle more passengers than the existing two combined.

Officials at the Civil Aeronautics Administration under the MOTC said the new and third terminal will have other major functions like exhibition hall and shopping center for the convenience of passengers and increasing revenues,

A total outlay of NT$60 billion will be earmarked for the project. Construction work is expected to last for seven years with opening tentatively set for 2018.

Terminal One at the airport has a capacity of accommodating 12 million passengers a year, but the figure can be increased to 15 million after the completion of the ongoing modifications and renovations.

Terminal Two can handle 18 million passengers.

But the capacity of the new terminal is set at 43 million people.

CAA officials project the total passengers using the international airport will reach 58.6 million passengers 20 years from now.

Yin Cheng-pong, CAA chief, said there will be more commercial functions for the third terminal than the current two. The new terminal will also have the features for green structures for energy saving and reducing carbon emissions.

The CAA will hold public presentations on major concepts for the new project at Terminal Two on Oct. 28.

Designing firms and construction companies were invited to take part in bidding for the project.

The CAA also called for suggestions concerning how to connect the structures and services of the second and third terminals for most effective operations.

In view of the huge budget involved, the MOTC is inclined to inviting investors from the private sector to jointly complete the project.
