First lady returns after overseas humanitarian trip

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- First lady Chow Mei-ching returned to Taipei yesterday morning after an overseas humanitarian trip that took her to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, two of Taiwan's Caribbean allies.

Chow was all smiles and appeared to be in good spirits when she arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the country's main gateway. She greeted reporters by waving her hand and saying “good morning” but did not deliver any statements, in line with her typical low-profile manner.

The first lady departed Taipei Aug. 29 for the two-leg Caribbean trip in her capacity as the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China and as “love ambassador” for the World Vision Taiwan charity organization. It was her first overseas humanitarian trip since becoming first lady in May 2008.

Accompanied by her daughter Lesley Ma, Chow visited hundreds of children — including six whom she and President Ma Ying-jeou are currently sponsoring through World Vision — during her trip. The mother-daughter duo were an instant hit with the children in both countries. Chow was the first Republic of China first lady to ever visit the two Caribbean nations.
