Updated Sunday, September 5, 2010 11:56 pm TWN, The China Post news staff Ma stresses ROC's role in victory over JapanThe claim was made in an editorial published Friday in the daily paper marking the 65th anniversary of China's victory over Japan. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) also clarified that the victory over Japanese invaders was won by the troops and people of the Republic of China (ROC) with tremendous sacrifices in the eight-year resistance war started in 1937 and ended in 1945. President Ma solemnly rebuked the claim in the People's Daily because it is historical fact that the Kuomintang was the ruling party of the ROC government during the period of the resistance war against Japan, said Lo Chih-chiang, spokesman at the Presidential Official. Lo said that the president stressed that there was only one historic truth and the editorial of Beijing's official newspaper has deviated from the truth. He said that Communist troops played a certain role in the process, but the ROC troops always played the crucial roles in the 22 major theater battles, 1,117 large-scale battles, and 38,931 clashes. The facts should not be twisted or changed that a total of more than 200 generals plus over 3.22 million military officers and soldiers gave their lives and blood to defend the nation and the people, Lo said He also pointed out that Beijing leader Hu Jintao made a more fair statement when marking the 60th victory anniversary on Sept. 3, 2005. Hu stressed that the troops led by the KMT and the Communist Party had played respective roles in the frontal battles and behind the enemy lines for the eventual defeat of the invaders. A statement by the MND blasted the attempt by the Communist Party to take entire credit for the victory against the invading Japanese military forces. The ministry also listed the factors that the ROC government had frequently participated in international conferences for coordination against Japan during the war. It was also the ROC government that received the surrender of the Japanese government to end the bloody war, said the statement. Such historic facts are not contained in the military archives of the ROC government but also in the official records of Japan's Defense Agency, the ministry said. Ma, instead of claiming victory over the Japanese, should tell the Taiwan people how the KMT, with all the vast armaments, lost a country. Was it corruption or ineptitude which made the people lost faith in the KMT as a government? Time to tell the truth instead of seeking past lost glory! Forget the past, it hurts. KMT should just turn a new page and simply move on!
