Lu Yen-hsun gets direct acceptance to Shanghai

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's top tennis player Lu Yen-hsun, hoping to rebound after an inconsistent summer on hardcourts, has received a direct acceptance to the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters next month.

Lu, who has been ranked in the world's top 50 since reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in early July, fell in the first round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday in New York, his third first round loss in four events on the North American hardcourt circuit this summer.

The 27-year-old lost to tough veteran Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in just over three hours. Hampered by a first serve percentage of only 53 percent, Lu yielded 17 break points during the match and lost six of them.

Lu has struggled with nagging injuries over the summer — first fighting a foot problem and then lower back issues — but he hopes to be fully recovered when the ATP Tour comes to Asia in September and October.
