Pres. Ma touts tourism while meeting Japanese politicians

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- President Ma Ying-jeou promoted Taiwan tourism during a meeting with visiting members of Japan's main opposition the Liberal Democratic Party at the Presidential Office on yesterday.

Ma said he hopes many Japanese will come to Taiwan for the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition slated to run from Nov. 6 this year to April 25, 2011. Flights between Taiwan's Taipei Songshan Airport and Japan's Haneda Airport begin on Oct. 31, just before the opening of the expo, he added.

In addition, Taiwan will hold various arts and cultural activities next year to celebrate the 100th national anniversary.

“It will be the best time to visit Taiwan,” he told the Japanese delegation headed by Shinji Inoue, a member of the House of Representatives.

Ma said that while Taiwan has taken efforts to improve links with its historic rival China over the past two years, his administration also wishes to improve Taiwan's economic ties with Japan.

Citing a study by the Nomura Research Institute in Japan, Ma said the success rate of Japanese investments in China was 68 percent, but the rate increased to 78 percent for Japanese investors that cooperate with Taiwanese companies when going into China.

He said he hoped Japan would take advantage of Taiwan's signing of the economic cooperation framework agreement with China in late June, increasing its investment in Taiwan to jointly expand market share in East Asia.
