CPC set to launch carbon storage pilot project soonThe project is expected to be concluded in late 2011, with the storage volume estimated at 50,000 tons to 100,000 tons, according to Wu Jung-chang, president of the company's Exploration and Development Research Institute. Wu said the storage site will be selected from among existing oil fields in Hsinchu and Miaoli. The CPC has in recent years been engaging in research into carbon capture and storage, a technology aimed at reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The method mainly involves capturing carbon dioxide from large point sources such as fossil fuel power plants, steel mills and petrochemical plants. The gas is sequestered and compressed before being injected into deep geological formations 1,000-2,000 meters underground for long-term storage. | |||||||||||||
