Taiwan's High Speed Rail wins engineering award

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) yesterday won the first prize for the "Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Award" as presented by the Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council (ACECC), according to local media reports.

The award was given in Sydney, Australia, where the 5th Civil Engineering Conference in the Asian Region is currently taking place from Aug. 8 to 12.

A THSR spokesperson said that they plan to show a short film documenting the construction of the Taiwan High Speed Rail during the awards ceremony that will conclude the conference.

The Taiwan High Speed Rail is significant and honored due to the fact that construction began right before the 921 Earthquake hit the island on Sept. 21, 1999. The extended railway — which includes masterfully engineered and intricately designed bridges and tunnels — was able to stretch across the northern and southern regions and overcome challenges posed by the differences in topography.

The Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council (ACECC) was established in 1999. Participating nations include Taiwan, the United States, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, India and Cambodia. The Civil Engineering Conference is held every three years.
