9,000 high speed rail passengers affected by switch glitch delay

TAIPEI,Taiwan -- About 9,000 passengers taking high-speed trains were affected after a malfunction at a set of split switches caused a closure of the northern section of the rail service and forced delays of 10 trains yesterday afternoon.

Executives at Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. said a split switch that separates different trains near Taipei City was turned off after it sent out irregular signals at 4:32 p.m.

The transport service for the section between Taipei and Banqiao City was closed for 68 minutes before the switch came back normal.

The company made emergency arrangement for passengers to take mass rapid transit (MRT) trains from Taipei to take the high-speed trains at Banqiao Station in Taipei County.

Executives said the company will also give affected customers a refund for ticket fares covering the Taipei-Banqiao section.
