Taiwan to run computer simulation of invasion

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's military is to run a computerized simulation of a surprise attack from China from July 19 despite warming cross-strait relations, officials said yesterday.

The round-the-clock simulation is scheduled to run for five days as part of the annual series of combined services military exercises. In the scenario, China launches an attack on Taiwan from Guangdong and Nanjing military zones, the officials said.

“Various branches of the military will conduct mock counterattacks aimed at honing combat strategies and battlefield management tactics during the simulation,” said Defence Ministry spokesman Yu Sy-tue.

Referring to Taiwan's alliance with the U.S., he said “there will be no simulation of military assistance from any outside forces.”
