Restaurants urged to put labels on giant burgersMany diners had to see dentists for jaw-related issues after consuming beef burgers served by two fast food chains, whose sizes are larger than normal, said Hsu Ming-lun, associate professor of the School of Dentistry of National Yang-Ming University. Some of them faced sore jaws and some even had difficulties opening their mouths; both are typical symptoms of Temporomandibular dysfunction, an injury related to jaws, added Hsu. People normally have their mouths open for some four centimeters to eat, but these burgers are measured over eight centimeters in height, pointed out dentist Chen Yun-chih. Consumers are thus forced to over-extend their jaws in order to bite into these burgers and thereby suffer jaw-related injuries. Forcefully widening one's mouth will result in inappropriate pull of the temporomandibular joint, which is between the temporal bone in front of the ears and jawbone, Chen explained. Dentists also called on these fast food chains to not provide such food items to attract customers.
