Chen Shu-chu returns to work after U.S. trip

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Taiwanese woman honored as one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time Magazine in New York last week returned early Tuesday morning to her normal life selling vegetables in the eastern county of Taitung, a life she hopes will no longer include the media.

Chen returned to Taiwan Monday morning after a five-day tour of the United States, during which she was honored by Time as one of the heroes on its top 100 list for donating NT$10 million to charity during her lifetime despite her modest income.

Her achievement and trip that took her to New York and San Francisco received intensive media coverage, making her a media star, but she seemed ready to get back to business Tuesday morning.

Just after 3 a.m. Tuesday, Chen showed up at the wholesale market to pick fresh produce and received a warm welcome from other vendors.

At 4 a.m., her stall in the local traditional market opened for business, and customers were already waiting and made purchases right away.

Still shy and not used to the media, she asked the reporters gathered at the market to stop taking pictures and stay away, the same plea she made a day earlier at a meeting with Taitung media at the county magistrate's office.
