Tseng Yung-fu named new Justice MinisterActing Prosecutor General Tseng Yung-fu will be sworn in as the new justice minister Monday, according to a Cabinet announcement. Asked if Tseng would have death-row inmates executed, Wu told the Legislature that he believes the new minister will act according to the law. Wu said that he made the appointment after obtaining consent from President Ma Ying-jeou during their meeting on Thursday. He said he had also notified Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng of the appointment. Wang stepped down last week after coming under fire over her refusal to sign the execution orders for 44 inmates. Tseng, 67, a former vice justice minister, has served as chief prosecutor in Taipei, Tainan, Taitung, Yunlin and Chiayi, as well as the outlying island of Kinmen, the Cabinet statement said. Tseng, who obtained his law degree from National Taiwan University, has also served as a chief prosecutor with the Taiwan High Court Prosecutors, and a chief secretary for the Ministry of Justice, according to the statement. He is currently a senior member of the Supreme Court Prosecutors Office. He is its acting chief after Chen Tsung-ming stepped down as prosecutor general earlier this year. Acting Justice Minister Huang Shih-ming has been named a successor to Chen. The appointment needs the approval of the Legislature. | |||||||||||||
