President Ma's daughters in U.S. receive death threat: report

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan has asked for U.S. police protection for the daughters of President Ma Ying-jeou after a death threat was made against them on the Internet, a report said yesterday.

The request followed concerns for the women, who live in New York, after a message titled “Killing Ma's Daughters” was found in a popular on-line chatroom, the EETV cable news channel said.

According to EETV, the message read: “Do you think everything will be ok when you are hiding in the United States?”

The message, which was soon deleted, drew concern as the women did not have bodyguards, the report said.

“We have notified relevant authorities in Taiwan and the U.S.,” said presidential spokesman Lo Chih-chiang but he declined to comment on specific security arrangements.

Ma swept to power in 2008 after a landslide election victory vowing to boost China ties but saw his popularity dive last year over his government was seen as reacting slowly to a deadly typhoon.

Opponents are also critical of his Beijing-friendly approach which they fear jeopardize the self-ruled island's sovereignty. His daughters work for New York-based Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang.
