Tomb Sweeping Festival to feature freeway toll exemption

The highway bureau said that tolls will be waived from midnight to 7 a.m. on April 3 to 5 to relieve traffic, with an estimated 2.2 million to 2.4 million cars to swarm the freeways as people rush to tidy ancestors'graves.

In a rare move to further ease traffic by encouraging early tomb sweeping, the bureau announced March 27 and 28, the weekend before the festival, to be toll-exempt as well.

In another attempt by the bureau to reduce congestion, motorists will be allowed to drive on hard shoulders along selected sections of freeways from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April 3 to 5.

Small vehicles will be able to drive on freeway shoulders of Neili (內壢) to Chungli (中壢) section on Freeway No.1, Daxi (大溪) to Lungtan (龍潭) section on Freeway No. 3, and from Wufeng (霧峰) to Jhongtou (中投).

Designated lanes will be available for large north-bound vehicles from Yilan (宜蘭) and Luodong (羅東) on Freeway No. 5.

The Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) and the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. (THSRC) are getting prepared for the holidays as well by adding more trains.

TRA stated it will add a total of 265 extra trains on April 2 to 6 with bookings commencing at 6 a.m. on March 16.

THSRC announced an additional of 30 south-bound and 34 north-bound trains for the holidays, increasing the frequency to one train every 10 minutes.

Forty-three of the trains will only stop at Taipei, Banqiao, Taichung, Zuoying, while 21 will stop at every station.

Special “Tomb Sweeping Festival discounts” will be available for THSRC customers and booking starts at midnight on March 19.
