Different lanterns have very different fate

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Local governments are deciding on the fate of lanterns from various lantern festivals around the country that recently concluded, local news reported yesterday.

Local municipalities, the official organizers of many lantern festivals, are now to decide on how to preserve or destroy the many lanterns. While some are set to be destroyed, others have found permanent homes in private enterprises.

A travel business has expressed interest in purchasing the feature lantern “Heaven's blessing for good fortune to the people of Taiwan” (福臨寶島) of Taiwan Lantern Festival, said Chiayi City government. But officials have yet to decide whether to sell the lantern or to keep it in storage for future display.

Taichung Lantern Festival paid NT$1.8 million for license to use Disney's Tigger design in its main lantern for 15 days during the festival. In accordance with the contract, the main lantern and 56 other lanterns were destroyed Monday.

The main lantern “Hoki” at Taipei's festival will be dismantled and stored for an encore appearance at the 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo in November.

In the past, the center pieces from Kaohsiung County's festivals were either kept in their original spot or moved to parks. This year, the county has lend the lantern to Qing Yun Temple (青雲宮) for a festival that the temple is holding and will find other means of preserving the lantern afterwards.
