Lowest college admission requirement announced: CAAC

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The College Application Admission Center (CAAC) announced on Monday last year's minimum admission standards based on the College Entrance Exam (CEE) scores for the different departments in various universities.

CAAC released the statistics for the first time because they wanted to provide students with better references for their college applications. Some information provided by cram schools were inaccurate and led students to make bad decisions, said Jiang Bing-hung, executive secretary of the Joint Board of College Recruitment Commission (JBCRC).

The CEE consists of five subjects — Chinese, English, mathematics, society and science. Results of the exam are considered in the first phase of the college admission process for all applicants. Individual departments at different schools weigh scores from the subjects according to their relevance to the department's field of study. Students can proceed to the second phase only if they pass the threshold set by the departments they applied.

Some high school teachers and students said they found the information helpful. The statistics will offer better information for students to prioritize their choices. Some experts, however, expressed worries that the statistics would encourage students to decide their options based on the requirements instead of their interest, as the minimum requirements somehow reveal the ranking of the schools.

In response, Jiang emphasized that the statistics were only for references for students in regards to college applications, which should not be perceived as college ranking. Some parents and teachers asked JBCRC to release the lowest total scores needed for admission as well, but the commission refused because it might worsen the problem of college ranking, said Jiang.

According to JCBRC, the College of Medicine and the College of Law in the National Taiwan University are among the most competitive, both of which required nearly perfect scores in all subjects. The Department of Marketing and Logistics Management in Hsing Kuo University of Management is among the departments with lowest standards, Apple Daily reported.
