A good chance for a female president in 2012: ex-VP

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Former Vice President Annette Lu said yesterday that after seeing Costa Rica elect a female president, she thinks women stand a good chance of success in Taiwan's 2012 presidential election.

With the election last weekend of Laura Chinchilla as president of Costa Rica, one cannot help but wonder if a woman would be the next president of the United States, Lu said.

“I think women also stand a good chance of winning in Taiwan's next presidential election,” she added.

She noted that currently, Tsai Ing-wen is chairwoman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and three other DPP women — Su Chih-feng, Chang Hwa-kuan and Chen Chu — are heads of Yunlin County, Chiayi County and Kaohsiung City, respectively.

“I don't know what will come next, but it is very likely that the world trend of women playing bigger roles will continue,” she added.

Meanwhile, she expressed the view that since the administration of President Ma Ying-jeou took office, Taiwan's relations with the United States and Japan have regressed.
