NT$21.5 billion for 2010 railway construction: CEPD

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The government is slated to earmark NT$21.5 billion (US$671.87million) this year for several railway construction projects around the country, exceeding the NT$18 billion set aside for road construction, the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) reported yesterday.

The railway construction projects will upgrade the service quality of the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA), which transports some 500,000 passengers every day, the CEPD said.

According to the CEPD, the Executive Yuan has approved projects that will see the TRA phasing out its aging rolling stock in line with an electrification plan along the 155-km rail link between Hualien and Taitung in eastern Taiwan, with various other plans awaiting approval.

To increase the self liquidation ratio and rack up greater profits, the government will also devote funds to land development in areas adjacent to the major stations along the Hualien-Taitung line, the CEPD added.
