Two more lanes open to west-bound traffic to airport

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Starting 12:00 p.m. today, two more lanes will be open to vehicles driving on the section between the Dazhu Interchange and the Dayuan Interchange of the No.2 national expressway leading to Taoyuan International Airport, which is expected to significantly ease traffic jam on the section by at least 30 percent, the Taiwan Area National Expressway Bureau announced yesterday.

Wu Mu-fu, acting director of the Widening Construction Office under the expressway bureau, said that there will be four lanes available for western-bound vehicles driving to the Taoyuan airport through the said section of the No. 2 freeway that connects the No. 3 freeway and the airport starting at noon today.

Wu said that the maximum traffic flow on the two lanes of the aforementioned section is around 4,400 vehicles per hour, and the traffic volume will be doubled to 8,800 vehicles per hour after the two additional lanes become operational, which will significantly shorten the duration of traffic jams during the peak hours.

Construction of the two additional lanes on the said section, measuring only 4.4 kilometers, is part of a 20.4-kilometer widening project for the No. 2 freeway.

Traffic jams are usually seen during the peak hours, when heavy volume of vehicles are seen bound for Taoyuan International Airport, Dayuan Industrial Zone and Puxin Township, making drivers suffer traffic congestions of 10 to 20 minutes.

Wu said construction of the two extra lanes for east-bound vehicles on the same section of the No. 2 freeway will be completed for official operation by the end of July.

And the entire 20.4 kilometer widening project for the No. 2 freeway is slated for completion by the end of September 2011, according to Wu.
