KMT must win upcoming legislative by-elections

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Legislative by-elections for four seats, to be held Feb. 27, are so crucial for the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) that the party is under tremendous pressure to win, President Ma Ying-jeou, who doubles as KMT chairman, said yesterday.

In a morale-booster at a KMT meeting for the party's candidates in the by-elections in four counties, Ma called on all party members to strive for victory in the upcoming battle.

Ma said that since the KMT came to power, it has encountered numerous challenges and that as success in the by-elections is so vitally important to make up for the party's setback in Jan. 9 by-elections, everyone in the party should do their bit to drum up support for the KMT candidates.

During the meeting, Ma also presented party flags to all four candidates — Chen Shueh-sheng for Taoyuan County, Cheng Yung-tang for Hsinchu County, Lin Teh-jui for Chiayi County and Wang Ting-sheng for Hualien County.
