CLA says cancer is the top labor killer in 2008

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Cancer led the top ten list of labor killers in 2008, the Council of Labor Affairs said yesterday.

According to the list compiled by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, 55.1 out of every 100,000 laborers died from cancer in 2008. Accidental death came second with a mortality rate per 100,000 of 18.2, followed by heart disease with a 9.2 per 100,000 death rate.

Cancer and heart disease also topped the top ten causes of death list for the general public in 2008.

Liver cancer caused the most fatalities among male workers, followed by oral cavity cancer. Breast cancer, on the other hand, topped the fatal cancer list for female workers.

Construction engineering was the most dangerous profession in 2008, with a mortality rate per 100,000 of 313. The profession with second highest death rate was fishery (297). Agriculture and husbandry ranked third (265), followed by land transportation (254) and interior decorating (233).
