Hundreds queue for Dodgers tickets

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Hundreds of loyal fans queued up yesterday in Taipei and Kaohsiung to purchase the tickets to the exhibition games between LA Dodgers and Taiwan's baseball league following the Major League team's official announcement on Jan. 23.

The two exhibition games are slated to take place on Mar. 13 and 14 in Tienmu Baseball Stadium (天母棒球場) in Taipei City and (澄清湖棒球場) in Kaohsiung County.

Dodgers' pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo and infielder Chin-lung Hu, both from Taiwan, are expected to join the trip.

The Dodgers will play against the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), but the line-up from CPBL was yet not identified as of yesterday.

The Bros Sports Marketing (悍創運動行銷), which help invite the team to Taiwan, spared 1,000 and 3,000 tickets for advance purchase respectively in Taipei and Kaohsiung yesterday.

More than 800 hardcore baseball supporters arrived as early as in the morning yesterday at the Tienmu Baseball Stadium, given that the ticketing started at 2 p.m. As the organizers allowed each person to buy two tickets the maximum at this time, some early birds among the 800 did not get the tickets.

Nearly 1,800 fans crowded into the Cheng-ching Lake Baseball Stadium yesterday for the limited pool of 3,000 tickets.

The organizers planned to start the online booking next week; detailed information will be available this week, said the organizers.

The available tickets in online booking includes 7,000 in Taipei and more than 15,000 in Kaohsiung, added the company.

This trip will be Dodgers' second trip to Taiwan since the 1993 trip, which was also the first Major League team to play in the country.

MLB Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig said the games would not be part of the spring training schedule, but said that the exhibition games would be a historic event.

He was cited as saying the following in a statement on LA Dodgers' official Web site Jan. 23: “Major League Baseball is committed to the continued international growth of our game, and we are excited to have the opportunity to bring these games to the great fans in Taiwan.”

Also on the Web site, Dodgers owner Frank McCourt was quoted as saying that, “The Dodgers believe wholeheartedly in the development of the game of baseball internationally and we have many fans in Taiwan who we look forward to seeing in March.”
