Prayer breakfast attendants call for media responsibility

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Key participants in the 9th National Prayer Breakfast held in Taipei yesterday called for news media to fulfill their social responsibility by offering accurate, positive news contents rather than obscene and violent contents.

At the breakfast meeting, Catholic priest Chou Shen-chu termed the obscene and violent presentation of “Animated News” Web site by the Apple Daily as a kind of “dark force, and lauded Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin's decision to impose fines on the Apple Daily and ban city schools and libraries from subscribing to the Apple Daily until it improves the Action news contents.

Chou said that Hau's practice is aimed at allowing the next generation to grow up in a clean environment, and prevent the “dark force” from continuing to influence the country. Sun Yueh, a senior entertainer and national policy advisor to President Ma Ying-jeou, expressed hope that the news media will take up their responsibility to the general public by offering positive and accurate news contents.

Sun continued that news media should be concerned about the impact of their news reports on the social public, and avoid running sensational and misleading news stories.
