Online vote of top 10 public complaints starts

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The government yesterday kicked off an online voting campaign to sort out the top 10 complaints from local people, and will take effective measures to ease the complaints, according to the Cabinet-level Research, Development and Evaluation Commission (RDEC).

The DREC has posted 15 major complaints, collected from media reports, as well as petitions and appeals to various government units from local people, on the government's Web site at: www.gov.tw, in order for local people to select the top 10 complaints via online voting through Nov. 29.

Among the top 15 complaints are: rampant money swindling via phone calls and networks; difficulty in seeking jobs and the growing unemployment; excessively high commodity prices; exorbitant prices for housing units in urban areas; poor examination on food sanitation; occupation of sidewalks by parked cars or motorscooters; rampant supply of drugs; random attacks by wild dogs; high cost of long-term care for the elderly; overly rigid regulations for towing illegally-parked vehicles; public toilets being too dirty; unsafe baby-sitting or child-nursing services; poor facilities for mentally and physically handicapped people; difficulty in renovating residential buildings in scenic parks; and shortage of public leisure facilities.

The DREC was acting on an instruction issued by Premier Wu Den-yih, who has been actively settling complaints from local people and will take them as a reference when formulating administration policies.

Hmm... occupation of sidewalks by parked cars or motor scooters, and overly rigid regulations for towing illegally-parked vehicles... there's a conundrum for the authorities...
