Compared with the average male waistline released in 1996, men's waist sizes have increased 5.5 cm in nearly ten years from 73.5cm to 79cm. Women in the same age group have also seen a waist size increase of 4.2 cm from the average 67.2 cm to 71.4 in ten years. The survey also discovered that daily consumption of sugary beverages also doubles the risk of getting overweight. In addition to the aforementioned, the poll also showed that nearly 80 percent of men aged 19 to 65 consume sugary drinks; with 17.2 percent of them consuming at least one bottle daily. Women aged 19 to 65 were found to drink less sugary beverages than men. Nearly 70 percent of the women do not reject sugar-sweetened beverage and 7 percent of them drink at least one bottle a day. Sugary beverages raise the risk of developing metabolic syndrome; therefore, people should reduce their intake of sugar-sweetened drink, said Hsu Ching-hsin, DOH official.
