KMT lawmaker in affair to stay with wife

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Kuomintang Legislator Wu Yu-sheng, the married lawmaker who was exposed by the Apple Daily for his extramarital affair on Nov. 12., announced yesterday that he and his wife will not divorce and that he has not been in contact with President Ma since the story of his affair broke.

Wu also stressed that he did not use public donations unlawfully when he rented the splashy vehicle that was pictured on his “date” with alleged mistress, Rebecca Sun.

After a self-imposed five-day isolation during which he was able to “reflect” and “mend his relationship with his wife,” Wu re-entered the public eye at a packed press conference in front of the Research Office of the Legislative Yuan.

Wu opened the press conference by immediately talking about his family and condemning his own deceit and lack of self-discipline. Wu publicly apologized to his wife and family members for the great harm he caused and said that he was “riven with endless regret” over his misconduct.

Wu revealed that his wife was still “very angry” and has yet to forgive him, yet she is willing to give him “one more chance.” Despite media reports that Wu's wife would file for divorce, the legislator maintained that the couple will not live in separate residences nor will they divorce.

When asked whether Wu had been in contact with Sun, Wu said, “No,” stressing that, “my wife only gave me one chance.”

Wu said that his wife is not an impulsive woman and that they shared a very loving relationship, yet she is still angry but was willing to give him one more chance for the sake their children and family. For the past five days, Wu said he dragged his family through too much turmoil and pain; in order for him to resume his position as a good husband and father, he begged the media not to bother his family and allow them to re-establish a normal life again.

The legislator also apologized for disappointing his executives and seniors, emphasizing that he has not made any contact with Ma since the incident. Wu had served as Taipei City's spokesman when Ma was the city's mayor. When asked whether this exposure has affected Ma, Wu said that they had not spoken to him as he had been in deep state of self-reflection and repentance.
