Updated Monday, November 9, 2009 9:50 am TWN, CNA Round-the-island march for people beginsThe participants will walk around the island over a seven-week period to urge the government to put major cross-Taiwan Strait policies and agreements to public referendum and thus give more power to the people. Led by Lin, hundreds of people, including representatives from various civic groups, began The People Are the Boss walk from Long-San Temple in Taipei City. Former Vice President Annette Lu, who showed up at the temple to support the event, stated that the ruling Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China plan to sign three agreements in three years through three mechanisms, which she said is a violation of “The People Are the Boss” principle because it is all being done secretly. Lu urged President Ma Ying-jeou to listen to the voices of the people. Entering into any agreement with China without the consent of the people is undemocratic and will absolutely not be allowed by the people, she added. Lee Kuen-cheng, one of former Premier Frank Hsieh's close aides, also participated in the march. He said Hsieh was busy stumping for DPP candidates for the year-end local elections but will join the march soon. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
