Former city official tapped to lead cultural agency

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Executive Yuan deflected rumors Wednesday that former Taipei City official Emile Sheng would take over as head of the Council for Cultural Affairs (CCA) but did not deny he would be a suitable choice for the post.

Executive Yuan spokesman Su Jun-pin said Wednesday that Premier Wu Den-yih had made contact with several prospective candidates for the post and would make an official announcement on the appointment after making a final confirmation.

Local media reported that Sheng, the former chairman of Taipei City's Research, Development and Evaluation Commission, has been tapped to head the CCA after incumbent minister Huang Pi-twan tendered her resignation earlier in the month.

Although Premier Wu has asked Huang to stay on and take a couple of days off to rethink her position, Huang was reportedly insistent on resigning her post.

Wu's list of possible candidates for the post is not limited to people from arts and culture circles and includes others who hope to put a priority on thinking about how to serve the arts and culture community, according to Su.

Asked about whether Sheng, CEO of the 2009 Taipei Deaflympics Organizing Committee, is a suitable candidate for the position, Su said anybody who can contribute greatly to and meet the needs of the cultural and artistic sectors is suitable for the post.

Although Sheng is not from cultural circles, he has reportedly been tapped for his excellent communication skills and his capability of being able to fulfill President Ma Ying-jeou's election campaign promises on cultural affairs, integrate culture-related resources and groups, and implement cultural policy.

According to local media reports, in the first round of Cabinet reshuffle at the end of August, Sheng was asked to serve as a Cabinet member but he turned down the offer because he was busy organizing the Deaflympics.

It is reported that Sheng has been named as a member of a preparatory committee to organize activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ROC in 2011 based on his experience in running the Deaflympics.
