Foot mask products fail Taoyuan gov't tests on ingredients

TAOYUAN, Taiwan -- People who love to use feet masks may need to be more careful.

Several famous foot mask products failed tests for containing an excessive amount of stimulating ingredients by Taoyuan County Government. The county government supplier was asked to recall the products, according to the Apple Daily news.

A woman, surnamed Chen, bought three types of foot mask products and her feet were burnt and swollen after using the masks. Medical examination found that the product she used caused her pain because it contained too much acid content. Chen then reported this to the Public Health Bureau in Taoyuan County, said the report.

After an examination was conducted by the government, the PH level of three products including "Baby Foot," "Beauty Foot" and "Beauty Pack" were found to be below the standard of 3.5, meaning that such acidity could cause skin ulcers if used continuously.

Besides PH level, the level of salicylic acid of these products did not exceed the standard of 2.0 percent. However, these products failed to add the cautionary clause "Not to be used by children under the age of 3" that is required for products containing over 0.2 percent of salicylic acid.

People should be cautious before using products containing salicylic acid. "Skin conditions are different for different persons. People who have dry or sensitive skin are not encouraged to use these acidic products as they will cause the skin to itch and swell," said Dr. Huang Mei-yue of the Dr. Mainz Clinic to the China Post.

"Especially for pregnavnt women, they should avoid contact with this ingredient which will increase the risk of fetus abnormality," said Huang. "Generally, salicylic acid is used to help remove dead skin, smooth it and ease acne problems. But people should not use it routinely for a long time."

The Taipei County government had also sent officials to investigate, and seize unqualified products from the distributors of feet masks.
