Ma and Wang Jin-pyng, president of the Legislative Yuan, agreed to cancel the celebrations after Typhoon Morakot lashed Taiwan on August 8-9, killing more than 700 people in its wake. Wang as parliament speaker organizes the national day celebrations at the Presidential Square. “The money saved will go to the relief fund for the victims of Typhoon Morakot,” Wang pointed out.
