No Double Ten national celebration: Tony Wang

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Office of the President will hold a ceremony marking the Republic of China's Double Tenth national day on October 10, Tony Wang said yesterday.

“There will be no national day celebrations at the Presidential Square,” said Wang, President Ma Ying-jeou's spokesman.

“We'll have the ceremony, where President Ma will deliver a national day message,” Wang said. The president is working on the message, he added.

Ma and Wang Jin-pyng, president of the Legislative Yuan, agreed to cancel the celebrations after Typhoon Morakot lashed Taiwan on August 8-9, killing more than 700 people in its wake.

Wang as parliament speaker organizes the national day celebrations at the Presidential Square.

“The money saved will go to the relief fund for the victims of Typhoon Morakot,” Wang pointed out.
