Typhoon-related torrential rain forecastAccording to the weather bureau, Typhoon Parma was centered some 1,200 km southeast of Taiwan as of 11 a.m. Friday, moving in a west-northwesterly direction toward the island at a speed of 20 kph. The typhoon could move over the north of Luzon Island in the Philippines or could sweep through the Bashi Channel over the next few days, depending on atmospheric pressure changes over the Pacific, the CWB meteorologists forecast. Another typhoon, Melor, was even farther away from Taiwan as of news time, moving also in a west-northwesterly direction but at a slower pace of 15 kph. "The typhoon could take a northerly direction and sweep toward Japan if the Pacific high pressure system weakens further over the following several days, " the meteorologists forecast. Whether either makes landfall in Taiwan will depend on changes in the Pacific high pressure system, they said, although they forecast heavy rain for northern and eastern parts of Taiwan due to the combined effect of the two typhoons and the seasonal northeasterly monsoon. For central and southern Taiwan, they forecast cloudy weather but only a low chance of torrential rain. Friday saw temperatures drop to a comfortable 26 degrees - 29 degrees Celsius with sporadic showers under the impact of the northeasterly monsoon. Temperatures ranged between 26 degrees and 32 degrees Celsius for central and southern Taiwan, where there were sunny skies, with afternoon showers in mountainous areas, the forecasters said. | |||||||||||||
