Updated Thursday, October 1, 2009 9:26 am TWN, By Fion Li, The China Post Two tropical storms may bring rains until next weekMelor, the No. 18 typhoon in the West Pacific region this year, is moving northwest at a speed of 28 kph, said the CWB. A chief at Weather Forecast Center, Xie Ming-chang, told The China Post that Typhoon Melor, along with the No. 17 Typhoon Parma, which formed earlier on Monday, have the possibility of approaching Taiwan together. "Currently we cannot determine the courses of the two typhoons, this Sunday will be critical in forecasting whether they will hit Taiwan," said Xie. "We will continue monitoring their courses." Meanwhile, a tropical depression which had formed in the same area yesterday is likely to be weakened by the two upcoming typhoons, said the chief. Typhoon Ketsana, which had devastated the Philippines, had weakened in southern China, but its peripheral effects will continue to bring heavy rains in eastern and northern mountain areas in Taiwan. A front will affect Taiwan, bringing intermittent rains in all areas tomorrow, particularly in the eastern and northern regions, until the weekend, he said. "Therefore, we will likely have a rainy Moon Festival on Saturday." Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%.
