Some of the school clinics have been using the same thermometer for over 30 years, others have cockroach infestation problems and simply do not have the budget or resource to refurbish these areas, said Bayer. Each team was given NT$15,000 for its renovation effort, prompting members to look for second-hand wares online, or even fundraise more money by selling green bean soup and popsicles. One team even invited dentists to volunteer to do oral exams upon finding out that students of a particular school had not had the privilege of dental consultation due to the campus' remote location. Dai Li-wen, the general manager of the western medicine department at Bayer, said the company hopes the plan is not merely one that is executed over a month, but intends to “adopt” the schools so as to provide help that is not given by the government.
