FM Ou absent from charity fair for other engagement

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Francisco Ou, minister of foreign affairs, did not officiate at an international charity bazaar his ministry sponsored, because he had another important engagement, his spokesman Chen Ming-cheng said yesterday.

Ou was scheduled to open the bazaar for the International Cooperation and Development Fund held on Saturday.

All foreign chiefs or deputy chiefs of mission attended the fair, which was expected to raise a fund for the relief of victims of the Flood Disaster of Aug. 8.

“As he had another important engagement, the minister could not attend the bazaar,” Chen said. Hou Ching-shan, vice minister of foreign affairs, opened the fair instead.

Chen made the response to charges by Democratic Progressive Party spokesman Cheng Wen-tsan that Ou was in dereliction of duty.

“While not trying to obtain foreign assistance in the relief and reconstruction,” Cheng charged, “Francisco Ou was doing something else, and for that he should step down.”
