Updated Sunday, July 26, 2009 10:49 am TWN, CNA Chinese ROC supporters in U.S. split on ChinaThe divergence in views has come in response to the recent encouragements from Taiwan's government to seek a better atmosphere and more cooperation between Taiwanese and Chinese expatriate groups. President Ma Ying-jeou recently proposed a “truce” between Taiwan and China expatriate affairs. Moreover, Jen Hong, deputy minister of Taiwan's Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission (OCAC), said July 24 that pro-Taiwan overseas groups and pro China overseas groups should increase exchanges by holding joint celebrations of traditional holidays such as Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year. The anti-PRC ethnic Chinese groups are composed of Taiwan-centric overseas groups,pro-independence Taiwanese expatriates, KMT supporters from Taiwan, and old ROC loyalists who settled in the U.S. before the PRC was created. In response to the calls, groups supporting the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) said they have taken actions to increase exchanges with their PRC counterparts, but those supporting Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have objected to such moves. Lin Yuan, an OCAC committee member and member of the KMT U.S.A., told the Central News Agency that several pro-KMT overseas leaders established a “Cross-Taiwan Strait Peaceful Development Forum” with their Chinese counterparts two weeks ago. The forum already held its first session on “Effects of American Education on Both Sides of the Taiwan Strait” and will hold a second session in August on “Cross-Taiwan Strait Diplomatic Truce and Truce in Overseas Affairs,” according to Lin. Moreover, both parties are also planning to jointly organize a Mid- Autumn Festival celebration in Washington D.C. at the end of August or early September that will feature artists from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, he added. |
