Taiwan gets gold, silver, bronze at World GamesThe new medal tally of Chinese Taipei now includes three gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal, which outshines the haul of two each in gold, silver, and bronze medals from the previous World Games held in Germany. Huang Yu-ting took her second gold medal in two days after winning the women's 1,000-meter roller sports speed event with one minute and 51.73 seconds. Huang won a gold medal in the 300-meter event on Friday. Hsu Chao-jen, also from Taiwan, repeated a strong performance in the same 1,000-meter roller sports speed event with one minute and 51.95 seconds. She captured the silver medal in the 300-meter competition one day earlier. Pan Yi-jen added a bronze medal in the women's 15,000-meter event with 26 minutes and 59.020 seconds. Huang said she was thrilled after garnering two gold medals in two days. She expressed the hope that she can have a same excellent performance in the 500-meter event set for today. The Taiwan team, which uses a new title of Chinese Taipei in formal international sports events, still leads nearly all other teams based on gold medals bagged. Although Taiwan's three gold medals trail the Russian Federation's six, the number is still higher than the two gold medals won each by Japan and Korea and one each won by Ukraine and Colombia. Taiwan's total of six medals puts it in third spot, after Russia's total of 14 (including six golds, three silvers, and five bronzes) and Ukraine's seven in total (including one gold, five silvers, and one bronze). The dragon boat team of Taiwan won a silver medal in the 2,000-meter race and a gold medal in the 200-meter event back-to-back on Friday. But the medals were not included in the official tallies because the event is part of the category of “invitational sport” competition in the World Games. Other “invitational sport” events include beach ball, softball, tchoukball, and wushu (martial arts). In other major events held Saturday, Eugenia Kanaeva of Russia won two additional gold medals in gymnastics rhythmic to boost her total to four gold medals. | |||||||||||||
