No plan to replace defense minister: Ma

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- President Ma Ying-jeou has said that he has no intentions of replacing the defense minister despite his recent criticism of the military's slow response to rumors.

Ma said his criticism should not be misread to mean that he would dismiss Defense Minister Chen Chao-min, as he was simply reminding the military to react to rumors faster.

Media reports had claimed that the president angrily reproached Chen for taking three days to clarify rumors that the military had faked the outcomes of a drill in order to please the president. Chen was present when Ma faulted the ministry during a ceremony.
