80 percent of child killers are victims' parents: U.N. survey“Mothers experience great emotional and physical changes from pregnancy and birth. There is medical evidence that 10 to 15 percent of mothers develop postpartum depression,” said Yeh Yu-lan of Ministry of the Interior's committee on domestic violence. “Besides depressed moods, patients may experience lethargy, loss of appetite, insomnia, hopelessness and strong feelings of guilt as well as have suicidal thoughts. Some severe cases may even result in child mutilation,” continued Yeh. “Postpartum depression is more prevalent among first-time mothers - especially those who may have had difficulties conceiving and need to bear pain and financial burden from infertility treatments,” said Hsu Shi-cheng, a doctor of the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital. Hsu added that family members should temporarily relieve mothers experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression from baby caring duties and help them get medical assistance. | |||||||||||||
