Gov't eyeing new, alternative energy; rules to be relaxed

Yeh Hui-ching, director of the Bureau of Energy under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, made the remarks at a ceremony marking the inauguration of an alternative energy resources development association.

A statute aimed at promoting renewable energy development cleared the legislative floor Friday, paving the way for domestic renewable power generation capacity to be increased by 6.5 million kilowatts to 10 million kilowatts over the next 20 years.

Yeh hailed the completion of a third reading of the new law in the Legislative Yuan, saying that with the enactment of the statute, Taiwan will be able to join the ranks of countries with sustainable energy.

The statute lays down the legal infrastructure to encourage investment in renewable energy production and offers incentives to local consumers for installing renewable energy facilities.

In addition to permitting the state-run Taiwan Power Co. to buy electricity generated by private renewable energy investors, the bill will also allow the government to offer other incentives to speed up the development of renewable energy technologies.
