Updated Saturday, June 13, 2009 9:45 am TWN, The China Post news staff Ex-VP Lu urges DPP to have closed-door debates on China policyLu made the remarks at a press conference held to mark the inauguration of the Formosa Weekly. She was responding to requests by reporters to comment on a proposal raised by Lawmaker Lawrence Gao of the opposition DPP to hold public debates on the DPP's China policies. Gao raised the proposal at the weekly Central Standing Committee of the DPP. He said now with Ma Ying-jeou's administration rapidly tilting toward China, and Beijing similarly adjusting its Taiwan policy away from preventing independence towards promoting unification, it's imperative for the DPP to hold open debates, discussions and seminars to effectively work out a consensus on its China policies to cope with the new scenarios across the Taiwan Strait. In response, Lu, who is now publisher of the Formosa Weekly, said it would be better for the DPP to hold closed-door discussions on the issue to iron out consensus, before publicizing its China policies. When asked to comment on the fact that the central administration of the DPP opposed her visit to mainland China but supported Kaoshiung Mayor Chen Chu's visit to the mainland, Lu said that she's sure that following Chen's visit to China, there will be more rational and pluralistic discussions on the issue. As to another proposal calling for the DPP central administration to resume the party membership for ex-President Chen Shui-bian, Lu said that she personally opined that Chen had better focus on facing the lawsuits against him rather than seeking to resume his DPP membership.
