President Ma shows up at MND war gameMa, who returned to Taipei Thursday evening from a 10-day Central American tour, went to the Yuanshan and Hengshan command posts aboard an armored personnel carrier early in the morning. He was at Yuanshan with Premier Liu Chao-shiuan and his Cabinet as part of the war game to test the command and communications capability of the government. The president left the Hengshan command post shortly after 11 a.m. The war game, which started on Monday, closed after President Ma had left. There was no critique. According to the scenario, the People's Liberation Army landed altogether 200,000 troops in three areas on Taiwan after it had air and sea superiority. Taiwan's air force and navy were annihilated, though two traditional diesel-engine submarines survived in the shallow waters where they could not be detected. The submarines, on the other hand, destroyed many landing craft of the PLA navy. Chinese ground forces were landed in southern, central and north Taiwan. No troops were landed on eastern Taiwan, where a decisive sea battle took place. No decapitation operation was simulated. By the time President Ma visited the command posts, the Chinese forces were reduced to eight divisions, concentrated in north Taiwan. They were mopped up by a reorganized Taiwan army shortly after the president left for other previous engagements. | ||||||||||||||||||||
