DPP Taipei chapter to OK Chen membership

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taipei chapter is expected to approve applications by former President Chen Shui-bian to restore membership today.

Huang Ching-lin, the chapter chairman, visited Chen in detention yesterday to pick up the latter's application for rejoining the party he quit on August 15 last year to take responsibility for his wife's money laundering. “We'll hold a membership screening meeting on Tuesday, where the application will be approved,” Huang said.

The approved application will be submitted to the Central Office of the DPP, whose membership committee will decide whether Chen could return to the party he led to power in 2000.

One leading member of the membership committee is Luo Wen-jia, a protege of the ex-president. Luo has gone on the record by saying it is too early for his mentor to return to the party.

Chen, who is standing trial, has to wait until his first trial is completed before his rejoining the party can be considered, Luo said.
