DPP lawmaker slaps KMT colleague

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A woman lawmaker from the main opposition slapped a ruling party colleague in the face following a quarrel yesterday. Chiu Yi-ying said she slapped Lee Ching-hua on the face for what she call an insult to her parents. Lee, of the Kuomintang (KMT), later filed a lawsuit accusing his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) colleague of injury and public insult.

The fracas occurred during a legislative interior committee meeting when Lee's speech was interrupted by Chiu's protest.

Lee reprimanded Chiu, saying she needed to show that she had a "good family education." Chiu took the remark as an insult to her parents, as it implied that her parents failed to teach her properly. More verbal blows were traded and in the heat of the quarrel, Chiu slapped Lee.

Government officials were supposed to report to lawmakers on the progress of the upcoming meeting between top envoys from Taiwan and China in the Chinese city of Nanjing. The legislative meeting ended without hearing the report because of the row between Chiu and Lee.

Chiu and her DPP colleagues later called a press conference, demanding Lee apologize for the remark.

"Lee Ching-hua is not in a position to insult my parents," said Chiu. "If he refuses to apologize, I'll keep slapping him."

She denied that it was an act of violence. Instead, she said she was getting even on behalf of all women.

She vowed to sue Lee over the remark.

DPP legislative leader Ker Chien-ming said the KMT has been resorting to different forms of violence -- abuse of parliamentary dominance, verbal attacks, judicial manipulation and police forces -- since wresting back rule from the DPP last year.

"This is the biggest danger in Taiwan," said Ker, referring to what he called the KMT violence.

Lee said Chiu did not just hit him, but also his aides during the meeting. He said he did not fight back because of the principle that "men don't beat women."

He said Chiu was setting a very bad example in a society where violence was already a serious problem, citing two child deaths in two recent domestic violence cases.

"I am suing Chiu Yi-ying not for myself, but in order to prevent the dissemination of violence," the KMT lawmaker said.

Asked to comment on Chiu's vow to take legal action against him, Lee said the entire drama at the meeting was videotaped, and the DPP legislator would not be able to distort the fact.

Ms. Chui, PLEASE....I'm fairly certain most women with half an ounce of intelligence would not want you to represent them nor speak on their behalf. With all of the violence that happen upon women, it's a total disgrace for her to say that her action was not violent. Why do so many DPP or those who support DPP resort to physical violence?

DPP is enforcing their image as representing violence in Taiwan. Even more seriously, DPP does not even think it's a bad method to get their points made. Not being able to cope with verbal argument shows poor leadership. Everyone knows that violence does not solve anything. This kind of advertisement of violence is prohibiting progress, reduces any creditability and a big insult to the people of Taiwan. Physical fights in the government should be punished and person suspended, just like kids in school, no matter who started it. This is basic behavior that parents should teach their kids. Chui has not received that education obviously, so I would agree with Lee.

Thank you KMT and DPP for making Taiwan the political laughing stock of the world.

I think this story is so funny! By this woman's actions she was unintentionally proving this guy's comments about her not being taught proper values as a child. Even if it wasn't his meaning, aren't we all taught as children that hitting is wrong? LOL!

Only low class people sprouted out of DPP and only DPP are capable of bringing Chinese no freedom by inviting PRC for ROC downfall. DPP is working with no ethics or manners so it should be dismantled that ROC may have hope to recover Mainland in the future.

That [expletive deleted] Chiu should be punished for being a model of gangsters, inviting many people's death with 2 children’s death so far in the news.

The DPP think that they are still the ruling party and can do whatever they want. But in reality, they're not and WILL NOT. She is really UNEDUCATED.

Can't the DPP stop trying so hard to be a bad example for society by using physical attacks? I feel sorry for anyone who hits other people, they have no creditability at all in society and should be punished, for example with suspension, especially people in the government who should be the example for society. No matter how harsh the words, this should have never happened. A bad day for Taiwan.

If Lee were a gentleman and wise enough, he would not need to state what is evident (that she needs a "good family education") for everyone to see.

If Chiu were a true lady and wise enough, she would not need to interrupt a speech and later resort to violence.

Lee was very observant when he stated that "the entire drama at the meeting was videotaped." Had they used their thespian talent in a television studio, their words and actions would have been legal and educational -- perhaps just as captivating as the real event and worthy of a few awards!

The DPP has never achieved anything for our country and people since, before and after they took power eight years ago up to the present. They have no ethics as a public servant to serve the people. This kind of political party and politicians are unworthy and are not qualified to serve our nation and countrymen. DPP, you just stay home and watch TV or just WAIT for your PAYROLL.

DPP is worse than the Nazi and Communist parties. They interrupt and use violence. They use fists and anything they could find to harm other lawmakers. That’s why Taiwan was so dark in the Eight Long Years without any Peace, Freedom and Progress. The DPP is a DICTATORSHIP POLITCAL PARTY not qualified to represent as politicians to serve the people and Republic of China. Otherwise people in Taiwan will lose their Precious Freedom. Wake up now, people of Taiwan. Those DPP are WORSE than NAZIS and COMMUNISTS.

LONG LIVE REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

LONG LIVE DEMOCRACY.

LONG LIVE FREEDOM.

DOWN WITH DICTATORSHIP POLITICAL PARTY (DPP).

GO TO HELL THIEF CHEN.

DPP has been, is, and always will be a party of violence.

All they know how to do right is to tell lies. Lee should take this through the legal procedures all the way.

DPP needs to be taught a lesson starting with Chiu.

Given the choice, the DPP never seems to choose the high road. They are so predictable.

It's hard to determine whether it's because they don't have mental control over themselves or that the DPP simply doesn't feel violence is wrong. They certainly always feel it's justified (they did this-or-that so we had to hit them).

DPP (in Capital Bold) demands an apology for the remarks??? What and who is DPP? You mean the DPP owns Taiwan and sets their own laws? Encouraging all of Taiwan women to slap, hit anyone when they can’t win a debate and to interrupt when others are given the right to reply and speak??? No. This Chiu Yi Ying is a nice lady but badly brought up. Can we say this could be the parents’ fault? Maybe not. The parents may have been thinking of bringing up an honorable Legislator Chiu Yi Ying to change Taiwan in this mold. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose, provided this idea "sells" and Taiwan people accept. Really, are the Taiwanese that easily influenced? I wonder. Mind you, in her explanation she self proclaimed herself as the Guardian and protector of Women rights for slapping Mr. Lee. Poor Mr. Lee. In the underworld law she would be skinned alive for doing this to the Big Boss.

Looks like she's using the DPP’s most famed hit-and-run tactic...what a coward...

DPP. Are you a boxer or what? Are you educated? Did your parents fail to discipline you? Are you with a human brain in your head? Are you serving your people and country? Shame on you. All the DPP should resign. They are all uncivilized, have no self respect and all are incapable of doing their duties and responsibilities. They’re all just a waste of taxpayer money.

I can't believe the furor over this slap after watching this fracas during the previous administration's rule... Can't remember it getting the coverage that this "bitch" slap has been getting...

Perhaps Mr. Jackie Chan was right.

DPP a party of violence? You don't remember the violent KMT demonstrations five years ago?

I could support the DPP (Despicable Phony Patriots) 100% of the time, even pay to rent a bus for the phony downtown protests, if the DPP elected body would do 2 things:

1. Repatriate their families and money from North America, Australia, Europe and New Zealand.

2. Close all their businesses on the Mainland and return all employees from the mainland.

Performing these 2 simple tasks would prove to Taiwan that they are sincere patriots, not phony patriots.

Thank you ladies and gentlemen.
