What's wrong with Wang?

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- What's wrong with Wang Chien-ming?

That's the major question lingering in the minds of the vast number of baseball fans about the third defeat of the Taiwan-born ace pitcher of the New York Yankees.

The Yankees starter swallowed his third defeat of the newly opened season after the Cleveland Indians scored a 22-4 victory over New York, including 14 runs in the second inning, before more than 45,000 baseball fans Saturday.

Wang, now 0-3, was responsible for eight runs before being relieved in the second inning by a rookie pitcher.

He started the game smoothly by striking out three Cleveland players in the first inning.

However, he was relieved from the mound in the second inning after going awry and allowing eight runs, including one homer for three runs.

Even some Indian players were baffled. They felt that Wang turned into a different person in the second inning, judging from the lopsided performance in just two innings.

Wang said he could understand the team managers' possible decision of having him skip one starting game before coming back from the current slump. Fans in Taiwan were shocked at the latest performance after Wang scored 54 victories in 97 games during the past four seasons, including 19 wins in each of the last two seasons.

Some explained that Wang may still need more time to regain his original form after he was sidelined and put on the injury list for 10 long months due to a foot injury that seemed to have made his pitching rusty.

Others said that Wang could have not yet fully recuperated or have suffered some new injuries.

One priority for Wang now is to undergo a thorough physical check as early as possible, they said.

If Wang proves physically sound, he should be giving more opportunities to regain his winning form by participating in more games.

Yet some others suggested that Wang may need help from psychological counselling for resisting pressure and breaking out the current slump.

Speed was another problem, some baseball observers here noted.

They pointed out that Wang's speed slowed to around 90 miles during the game. A lethal weapon can become dull and lose power after losing speed.

There are complicated reasons for wins and losses in the highly competitive professional baseball games in the U.S., they said.

Although there are no quick answers, speed, mechanical movements like controls over the ball, and psychological pressure could have all contributed to Wang's disappointing performance so far this season, they said.

He's a sinkerball pitcher with a sinkerball that doesn't sink. His mechanics seem flawed or even worse, he's lost it completely. He needs a trip to the minors to straighten things out. Unfortunately, he'll need to clear waivers for that to happen and the yanks aren't likely to take that chance...for now. Only the immature Taiwanese media would suggest he needs psychological counseling to break out of his slump; if that's his real problem, his career in the big leagues is finished.

He is human after all. We all have our ups and downs at work and in life.

Wang Chien-ming is finished, this is the last season for him in the major leagues. The reason is all those commercials in Taiwan showing him as larger than life, so he started thinking he was better than anyone else, making him ignorant of the fact that if he is not focused for every season, the same baseball that took him to the top will now end his career this season.

Yes, he appears to be in deep trouble. The Yankees can't afford to wait and lose while he figures out what is wrong; that's what he was supposed to do in the off-season and spring training. This is the major leagues and it looks like he is just about done...maybe now the folks who were upset he didn't pitch in the WBC will be happy because he can come back and pitch for the TPBL (ugh)!

He is a great pitcher, and I think that he will overcome current frustration. Wang! Continue to stimulate our enthusiasm as we watch you pitch and win victories.

How about the coaching staff? Isn’t it that after the Yankee management changed Torre and the guys for Joe what’s-his-name that this roller coaster started to get out of control?

Hello...

Maybe he really does have psychological problems and some suggestions may help him recover faster. I don't agree with your opinion: Taiwanese media hope Wang would get better as well and it may be a useful suggestion. Anyway, God bless Wang.

Hello...
I agree. The bad part is he's on the Yankees who are more into buying more talent than fixing old ones. Even Carl Pavano who was on the DL for the past two years when he was on the Yankees couldn't even get into pitching form and got little help from the Yankees training staff. Yet, when he got on the Indians, to even begin the season he ends up giving up 1 run and actually healthy (something Yankees medical staff couldn't seem to get him up to). I think if he can’t do well on the Yankees he will do better on another team. He is far from ending his career and China can only wish they had baseball talent of his caliber. Daveymac definitely needs psychological counseling. lol

At least he will be advised to run for mayor of Tainan by the DPP.
