A working holiday visa program that would allow young people from Taiwan to stay in Japan for up to one year will be launched June 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said yesterday.
Taiwanese nationals aged 18-30 are eligible for the program, which in its initial stage will offer up to 2,000 openings per year. Applicants need not be fluent in Japanese to be eligible for the program. Japanese nationals will be granted the same benefits as their Taiwanese counterparts under the working holiday agreement. MOFA Spokesman Henry Chen said the program is part of the government's efforts to foster closer cooperation and exchanges between the two countries. He added that the agreement aims to strengthen exchanges between young adults of Taiwan and Japan and further bolster bilateral relations. Japan granted visa-free entry to Taiwanese passport holders in 2007 and is the third country to sign a working holiday agreement with Taiwan, which signed similar pacts with Australia and New Zealand in 2004. Earlier in the year, 100 Taiwanese youths traveled to Japan for educational exchanges at the invitation of the Japanese government, and a reciprocal gesture will be extended to Japanese high school students in the second half of the year. |
